Jawi is the Arabic script adapted for writing the Malay language. Its history in the region stretches back to around 1300 CE, with its development closely tied to the arrival of Islam from Persia. Additionally, the script is written from right to left and includes its own specific punctuation. The use of Jawi persisted for centuries, and it wasn't until the mid-20th century that its official status began to shift. Following a conference in 1956, it was decided that the official script for the Malay language would be Rumi, leading to a steady decline in everyday literacy of Jawi.
